Emergency Preparedness with DrKnow

As was painfully illustrated by the devastation wrought by hurricane Katrina, it is essential to have an emergency plan. With regard to patient health, it is critical that patients and physicians have recourse to medical information in the event of disaster.

It is also important that patients who travel have immediate access to their medical information.  Given that it is often difficult to quickly contact a family physician while traveling, a traveler should have a backup plan.

Thus, DrKnow™ offers the following:

  • DrKnow™ can automatically convert a patient record to a universally readable PDF format, and email the record.  This means that upon request, a patient’s complete medical record is available in any location around the globe.

  • If a practice elects to use DrKnow™ via web or ASP, then medical information is encrypted and stored on several redundant servers in different locations, thus ensuring that if a disaster strikes any particular region, medical information is not irrevocably lost or destroyed, and is immediately accessible from anywhere in the world.

  • Through DrKnow™ a physician can provide a patient with his/her medical history on a CD or flash memory (e.g. key chain size -- excellent for traveling), in a universally readable format.  Therefore, in case of an emergency where the patient’s physician cannot be reached, the attending physician has a guide to the patient’s health.
