- The physician can write a new prescription while viewing medical record.
- For any prescription written for the patient, the program automatically updates the medication synopsis. All medications are correlated to the diagnosis for which they are being prescribed.
- Automatically warns the physician of drug-drug interactions and drug-diagnosis interactions.
- Attempting to prescribe a medication for which the patient has an allergy (or any medication of the same class of pharmaceuticals) will generate a warning including the symptoms related to the allergy.
- Prescriptions can be marked as non-renewable so that after the originally prescribed number of refills, the prescription can be re-issued or renewed (aka “refilled”). This is particularly important for medications that might be addictive, or whose distribution should be restricted.

- In the same window where medications are ordered, the system offers detailed drug information and “standards of care” relating to the diagnosis.
- At the time a prescription is issued, the system checks for compliance with insurance company’s formularies (if formularies have been imported into the program) and offers alternatives by class of medication when the medication would not be covered.
- There are audit trails for each physician to review prescribing “habits”, especially for controlled substances. There are also audit trails for those renewing prescriptions.
- “PRN” prescriptions automatically expire one year from date of issuance.
- For the selected drug, the program provides a list of drugs from the same class of therapeutic agents; the physician may select an alternate medication merely by clicking it.
- When writing a prescription, the program can automatically write the formulation and dosage that the physician typically prescribes, which can then be modified if required.
- Allows office personnel to quickly check whether a prescription is legitimate and whether it should be refilled (by viewing the medical record).
- Automatically attaches patient instructions, such as "take with food".
- Provides patient education material with a single click.
