Laboratory and Diagnostic Studies

DrKnow accomodates:
  • Routine laboratory results (e.g. blood, urine, CSF, other fluids and tissue)
  • Images (e.g. X-rays, CT, US, MRI, PET and nuclear medicine scans)
  • EEGs and EKGs

Routine Labs

  • Routine laboratory studies are ordered (see window below) by simply clicking on the desired test. Panels (collections of tests) are readily accomodated. Note that the diagnoses are gleaned from the medical record, but can be edited. Necessary demographic information is automatically supplied with the order. Also note that both "in house" and outside laboratories are accomodated.

  • Results may be received and entered into the medical record electronically, or may be manually entered.

  • A list of all results awaiting review (approval) is available at any time and is updated automatically (see window to the right). The physician may approve results either from this window, or directly from an individual patient's chart. Note that the physician can readily review the patient's chart and previous laboratory results when deciding whether to approve a result. If the physician "rejects" a result, the test is placed onto a worklist to be repeated.

  • Results for a patient are shown in a chronological fashion as illustrated in the table below. Note that appropriate "flags" indicate results "out of range" and that free text comments both from the physician and the laboratory may be associated with each result. The physician can select given test(s) for either tabular or graphical review thereby obtaining a longitudinal perspective. (See image below)
